Student Chromebooks

Student Chromebooks
At St. Barnabas, our education goes beyond memorization of facts and figures.  We also focus on teaching skills.  This ensures our students can be successful both in and out of the classroom today and in the future.  Computers are a powerful learning tool. It is important that students understand how to harness the power of technology to find answers, organize information, and collaboratively share ideas.
  • Students in grades Pre-K through 2 share Chromebooks and charging units provided in the classroom on Chromebook carts.
  • All students in grades 3 through 5 are each assigned their own Chromebook, charging unit and case to be used when switching classes, however the Device is left on a cart in their homeroom overnight and when not in use.
  • Our students in grades 6 through 8 are each assigned their own Chromebook, charging unit and case and are also responsible for transporting the device to/from school daily and to all classes.

In this way, all of our students are able to learn how to leverage technology as a tool for success.

Chromebook Applications

Chromebooks have countless classroom applications.  All St. Barnabas teachers have their own assigned Chromebooks so they too understand the technology and can bring fresh ideas on how to leverage them into their curriculum.  While there is no limit on ideas, here are a few applications in the classroom.
  •  Google Docs for Education
    • Word Processing (storytelling, writing, electronic note taking)
    • Document Sharing (collaborative team work)
    • Spreadsheets (analyzing data, creating charts)
    • Presentations (public speaking, organizing information)
  • Google Forms (quizes, surveys)
  • Google Maps (social studies, history)
  • Google Sites (student ePortfolios, presentations, etc)
  • Internet Search (how to safely seek and find information)
  • Videos (science experiments, cultural awareness)
...plus so much more!

Insurance

Each student who is issued his/her own dedicated Chromebook is responsible for maintaining a 100% working device at all times, and is responsible for full payment of the device to St. Barnabas if it is damaged, lost, or stolen.

While insurance is optional, it’s highly recommend insurance be purchased by each student/family in grades 6 - 8.  It’s also highly recommended that each student/family in grades 3 - 5 opt for insurance, as students are transporting the devices between classes.  Students in Pre-K through 2nd grade who only have access to the shared Chromebook cart do not need to purchase insurance.

The School’s insurance partner for school issued devices is Worth Avenue, and the cost is very nominal and affordable for the year. The enrollment time period with Worth Avenue is always limited to the beginning of the school year.  You will need your child's student ID to purchase the insurance through Worth Avenue.  This number can be found once you login to OneView to complete your online forms, MySchoolAccount when you login to view or load your child's school lunch account, or in the desktop mode of ProgressBook where you find your child's grades.  Or you may need to contact the School Office at 330-467-7921 or [email protected]

Alternatively, you may choose to add your student's device to your homeowner's or renter’s insurance policy.
