STEM Program/Dream Den
Our children are growing up in a world filled with ever-evolving technology and we aim to afford them the opportunity to be at the forefront of this cutting-edge technology through our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program. To be successful, we must embrace this phenomenon at home and in the classroom. Instructors must not only teach about technology, but they must also utilize it to engage students to reach their fullest learning potential. The benefits of the technology include advanced problem-solving and critical thinking skills, greater ability to explore difficult subject material, as well as igniting curiosity about topics that were previously inaccessible.
In our newly upgraded "Dream Den" our STEM instructor, Laura Walter, explains the need for technology does not end with the students. "We, as teachers, need technology to create new and innovative lessons, stay up-to-date on student security, track progress, communicate with parents, facilitate online testing and provide the latest software and training to do so, just to name a few things." At St. Barnabas School, we strive to integrate these subjects into everything we do. Project-based learning is often used to achieve this goal. Our robust science program and state-of-the art science lab enable students across the grades to learn in a hands-on environment.
Highlights of this program for older students include science competitions, programing and robotics which focuses on engineering. Engineering, IT and many other careers are explored through our Jr. High career elective courses. Our math program is exceptionally strong, featuring specialized math instructors grades 4-8. Three levels of math are offered for students in grades 7-8, allowing the highest performing students to complete and possibly earn credit for high school Algebra 1 in the 8th grade.
