Every year, on March 21st, people around the world come together to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day by wearing brightly colored or mismatched socks. This day in particular is symbolic because people with Down Syndrome have 3 copies of their 21st chromosome. Hence the date, 3/21. Socks were chosen because if you look at chromosomes under a microscope, they are shaped like mismatched socks.
The idea is that itis a conversation starter-people stop to compliment or question the colorful socks, and we explain that today is World Down Syndrome Day, and that we are wearing them as a way to show our love and support for those with Down Syndrom ein our schools, communities, and around the world. Another reason for wearing the socks is to promote the celebration of differences. God made us all special and unique, and we should celebrate that!
